Congress veteran K. Karunakaran passes away

Veteran Congress leader Mr K. Karunakaran passed away at a private hospital here on Thursday evening due to complications from persistent respiratory ailment and multiple organ failure.

He was 92, and is survived by a son and a daughter. His mortal remains will be kept for public viewing on Friday at the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) office here on Friday and later at the Durbar Hall.

Later in the evening, they will be taken to Thrissur where the cremation would take place on Saturday morning, according to KPCC sources.

He was admitted to hospital last Friday for fever and respiratory complaints. He had initially responded to medicines, but his condition started deteriorating from Wednesday after suffering multiple paralytic strokes. He had been put on ventilator support ever since.

Mr Karunakaran, who was a four-time Chief Minister of Kerala, has also been a Union Minister for Industries in the Narasimha Rao Government at the Centre in 1995.

He is credited with founding the United Democratic Front, a formidable arrangement of like-minded parties led by the Congress, which, along with rival Left Democratic Front, has enjoyed alternate terms of government in the State from the 1970s.
